A few Hints on
how to use
the Dictionary of Aeronautics
This dictionary is first and foremost meant as a practical and friendly tool designed to
help the user quickly find an accurate and reliable translation of the item he is looking
up.
The layout of the book aims at making a multirole tool of this dictionary designed to be
at the same time functional, didactic and pleasant to consult.
Organization and use of the dictionary :
Each chapter brings together the terms and expressions belonging to a
rather vast but specific field of the aeronautical world (the airport, the plane, air
navigation, meteorology, etc.).
This unusual layout for a dictionary allows the user to :
1) - use each chapter like a specialized dictionary for any
work dealing with a specific field of aeronautics. Should any doubt arise as to which
field the unknown item belongs to, the general index will rapidly refer the user to the
right page(s) and chapter(s).
2) - use the
dictionary like a vocabulary book and revise - or learn - the lexis
systematically (a variable number of terms and expressions can be learnt every day,
depending on one's needs and spare time).
3) - make a
selective study of some precise terms one may need for a special purpose :
briefing, talk, lecture, written report... about a specific field of aeronautics.
4) - make personal record cards about more precise topics by
reorganizing the vocabulary recorded in the dictionary :
e.g. : for each type of aircraft (airliner, fighter, helicopter, glider...) the user can
regroup the vocabulary dealing with :
- the frame - the cockpit
- the wings - the tail unit
- the engine - the landing gear...
5) - use the
illustration plates as vocabulary exercises, the legends and captions
having voluntarily been left monolingual with this purpose in mind. The user can first
train himself to translate the various items into the target language by looking up their
translation in the dictionary, then do the same exercise several times again, using the
dictionary less and less and his / her memory more and more .
6) - work
alone : hiding the French version, try and find out the right
corresponding English term. Then do the exercise the other way round.
7) - work in
pairs : user A can look at the French version only and user B at the
English version only. A and B ask one another questions about the translation of the terms
they are looking at - first in the alphabetical order, then at random. After checking
their answers they can reverse roles.
8) - work in
groups : this can be done in the form of a quiz to add some fun to the
exercise :
e.g. : a term (or expression) being given in French (or in English) each team proposes a
translation. The first team to give the correct translation is awarded one point. The game
goes on till one of the teams reaches a given score.
